It was my first visit to Africa and having a friend organize all of the details for me was a real treat. I normally spend months coordinating my trips but this was for a close friends birthday and he was treating so, of course, I had to join. It was an outrageous and decadent itinerary to be sure, we were the only two guests at one game reserve, having the Big 5 animals all to ourselves for a week before heading onwards via private Cessna planes to the Maasai Mara.
In the late 1990s, safari expert Geoffrey Kent set out to establish his own high-end lodging. To do so, the co-founder of Abercrombie & Kent looked to the place in Africa he knew best: his home country of Kenya. It was a natural fit for the first Sanctuary Retreats resort: Home to some of Sub-Saharan Africa’s most wildlife rich expanses—not to mention a collection of private concessions offering truly exclusive ways to explore them—the country’s Maasai Mara National Reserve ticked off all the boxes for Kent’s ambitious project.
A new camping experience has been launched that enables guests to witness the captivating migration of wildebeest and zebra across the Serengeti, all the while staying in luxury accommodation designed to look like the classic shelters of pioneering explorers from the 19th century.
